Shirley White Clarke was born to James Hampton and Caroline Houchens White on April 15, 1944, in Hanover County. She attended Bethany Elementary and John M. Gandy High School. Shirley accepted Christ early and joined Greenwood Baptist Church where she was a member for more than seventy years. At Greenwood, she was a member of the Woman of Wisdom (WOW) ministry and she also served as the Head of Hospitality ministry. Shirley, affectionately known as “Shirley Mae” was employed for fifteen or more years at Speed and Briscoe Restaurant. After, she was employed by Homemade by Suzanne for over 33 years, where she was greatly loved and respected by many.

On September 25, 1961, Shirley White Married Joel Thomas Clarke. From this union, they were blessed with Seven children: Sharon, Joel Jr., Daphane, Nathan, Tina, Michelle, and Timothy. Shirley loved attending to her flowers and was overjoyed by the many compliments she received. She loved preparing Sunday dinners for her family and welcomed all others.

Shirley went to eternal rest on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and Sister Louise. Shirley leaves to cherish her devoted memories to Joel T.
