Maxine W. Fleming, daughter of the late Blanche Ferguson-White and Emitt P. White was born July 15, 1928. Maxine peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at the Fredericksburg Health & Nursing Facility.

Maxine was proceeded in death by her husband Joseph L. Fleming, Sr.; her mother & father, son, Winthrop Ferguson, sisters: Auwilda Ferguson-Walker, Frances M. Ferguson-Parker, & Elsie Ferguson-Durant. Maxine was a woman of unconditional love and an awesome caregiver, who made everyone who encountered her feel welcomed and loved. If you needed a helping hand, she was there, or her networking skills would make it happen. Maxine was deeply loved by her neighbors and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Maxine attended Walker Grant High school after leaving, she earned her G.E.D. She belonged to Old Site Baptist Church. She was very passionate about family and friends. She was the one, when another parent wouldn’t seem to understand, and you showed up to her door, you could sit on her couch and chat ‘til your heart was content and left encouraged.

Maxine was an avid “Neighborhood Family Tree Historian”, if you resided in Fredericksburg during her reign, she could trace anyone’s family history back to the point of origin leaving most speechless. In her early years she was a “Merchandiser” and “Entrepreneur” long before it was in style. Sewing was one of her passions. She was making and selling head wraps & turbans way before Nick Cannon was born and made them famous. She was member of the Walker Grant Alumni Association, American Cancer Society, often going door-to-door to collect monies to support the cause. She loved to walk, checking out the bargins and scenery while grabbing a bite to eat downtown on Caroline Street with friends. When home she loved to sit in her wingback chair, sipping a cup of coffee while watching old Westerns (shoot’em ups as she would call them…), The Price is Right, Soap operas, and chat on the phone with loved ones and close friends.

Maxine is survived by her three sons, Keith W. Fleming, Joseph L. Fleming, Jr., Jason O. Fleming and one daughter, Tracy L. Fleming all of Washington, DC; one step-daughter Olivia Jones of Spotsylvania, VA; six grandchildren, Sharelle (Sweetie Cakes), Anthony, Delonte (Dee), Na’kayla, Thomisha, and Trevon; five great grandchildren, Jada, Jazmin (Jazzy), Kieran and Treyton and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
