Betty Washington Brown was born on January 2, 1949 in Caroline County, Virginia to the late Elwood and Mary Moore Washington. She received her education in Caroline County and graduated from Union High School in the Class of 1967. Renowned for her skill with needle and thread and love for crafting, Betty dedicated 34 years of her life as a seamstress at McGuire VA Medical Center. Her exemplary skills were widely acknowledged, earning her numerous awards and recognition. Sewing was a cherished skill she acquired at a young age. While cooking was not her cup of tea, baking brought her immeasurable joy and served as an avenue for her creative expression. Upon retirement, Betty combined two of her passions – history and service, by devoting a decade of her post-retirement life working at the Mary Washington House Museum. Her deep-seated interest in history was always evident, making her stint at the museum extremely fulfilling. Her unwavering commitment to public service also led her to work at Caroline County Social Services for eight enriching years. A faithful servant of God, Betty was an active and dedicated member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church since her early years. Her enthusiastic participation in the Black History Programs for several years added vitality to the church community. Betty is survived by her son, Andretti L. Brown, her daughter-in-law, Erika M. Brown, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a large circle of family and friends. | |
