Percy L. Stevens

Percy Linwood Stevens (Steve), son of the late Ruth and Anthony Spurlock was born December 20, 1934 in Caroline County, Virginia. God called him home to Glory on November 5, 2022.
He graduated from Union High School in Bowling Green Virginia in 1953 and attended Virginia Union University in Richmond for two years, majoring in sociology.

Steve met and married the former Katherine Louise Johnson of King William County, Virginia in 1957 where they celebrated their nuptials at a wedding reception at the Dawn School in Dawn, Virginia. This February, they celebrated 66 years of marriage. He raised his family in Washington, D.C. In his earlier years, Steve worked at National Airport and Hot Shoppe, but was most proud of his 31-year federal career at the U.S. Government Printing (GPO) in DC where he received numerous awards and recognition. He worked at GPO for 10 years, first as a printing plant worker in the Bindery before entering their Apprenticeship Program where he graduated in 1976. He retired as a journeyman.

For the next 30 years, he and Katherine resided in Dumfries, Virginia. They were blessed to have known long-time devoted friends, John and Doris Cary, and Woodson and Clara Mines.
Always aware of the latest news, he could often be seen with a Washington Post, Wall Street Journal or any newspaper in his hands. Steve was best known for his lengthy and engaging conversations. He knew everything about everything and kept you on the phone for at least an hour. His attending physicians would often say, “I enjoy talking with him”. Always the optimist, he enjoyed music, sports, and automobiles (preferably with maximum horsepower and a strong engine) and car shows. Affectionately called “Pop” and “Poppa Percy”, he was inquisitive and had a great sense of humor.
Percy was a protector, hard worker, provider for his family, and a man of pride and integrity. He never gave up. As he aged and became sick, he thanked God daily for a good life.
He was predeceased in death by his brother, Leon Stevens; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Robinson; and brother-in-law William “Bill” Johnson.

Percy is survived by, loving wife, Katherine J. Stevens; son, Glenn L. Stevens (Darlene Smith); and daughter, Gina S. Scott (Jerry). Grandchildren: Glenda Stevens, Joy Stevens, Patria Shepherd, Brandon Scott, Briana Scott, and granddog Dash. Great-Grandchildren: Malik Porter, Jada Shepherd, Journi Mosely, Mekhi Mosely, Jermaine Shepherd, and Jada Shepherd. Sister-in-Laws: Ruby Haynesworth (James), Channie Layne (Eugene), Phyllis Taft (Ray), Patricia E. Moore, (Clyde), and Rita Johnson. Brother-in-Laws: Rufus Johnson (Camille), Wayne O. Johnson, Ronald Edwards (Jackie), Donald Edwards (Sherrie) and Stewart Edwards. Nieces and Nephew: Charmaine Taylor, Leon Dewayne “Ranny” Stevens, Darlene Nichols and Lisa Stevens in addition to a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.
