Born Jan 2, 1928 to William and Lillie Johnson. Alphonzo Lindbergh Johnson, affectionally known as “Bug” was the 3rd of eight children. He is preceded in death by his brothers Wallace Johnson, Howard (Tick) Johnson , William (Windor) Johnson, and sisters Yvonne Clarke and Shelia Clarke. He joined Bethany Baptist church at a young age and attended Bethany School and Hanover Training School. He was drafted into the United States Army and traveled to many places including Kentucky, Washington State, California and Japan. He fought in the Korean War and was discharged in 1952 as a Corporal. Because of God’s grace and mercy and the prayers of his family, he came safely home. He then gained employment at Kingans (Hygrades) where he worked as a ham boner. When Hygrade closed in the early 70’s, he gained employment at the ABC Warehouse and served on the Equal employment Opportunity Advisory Committee and retired in 1992. He also worked part time jobs for A&P, Brooks Janitorial Services and Irv Sanderson Dealership. On April 17, 1954, he married the love of his life, Alma Ernestine Hawkins. From that union they had one child Denise Voncell Johnson Smith. As he called himself, he was a Jack of all trades. He said if he and his brother Doc couldn’t fix it, it couldn’t be fixed. He leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted daughter Denise Johnson Smith and son-in-law Steve Smith, Sr. Grand sons who worshipped the ground he walked on Steve Smith, Jr and Daynon Smith. Daughters-in-law Linda Smith and Lynette Smith. Two great grandkids he loved dearly, Kennedy Smith and Bryce Smith. He had two honorary grand kids that he love as his own Marcia Rhodes Tyler and Jason Hawkes. He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters who he adored, Margo Thaniel and Janice Giles (Thomas) and his brother who he loved dearly, Doctor “Doc” Johnson (Mary) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He had two devoted friends who he constantly talked with on the phone, Viola Coleman and Clara Henderson. |
