Robert Elwood Jones was affectionately known as Bob Jones. He entered eternal rest on Wednesday, December 2, 2020. Bob was the eldest son of the late Newton and Lettie Estelle Jones. His wife of 41 years (Jane); two step-daughters (JoAnne Anderson and Linda Mallory); and brother (Deacon James Newton Jones) preceded him in death. Bob was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Bumpass, VA. He was baptized on Friday, August 30, 1940, under the pastorate of Rev. Eugene E. Robinson and attended church regularly until his health declined. Bob married the former Lucy Jane Shelton on September 27, 1975. Jane’s five daughters were adults at the time of their union; however, he was the patriarch of the family to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren who gave him the nickname “Chief”. Bob was the personification of “quiet strength“. He had cataract surgery on both eyes before reaching puberty. He did not let his visual challenges prevent him from moving forward in life. In his early twenties he took on a leadership role in his family and went to work to assist his mother and siblings financially after the death of their father. Bob remained gainfully employed past the age of 70. He worked at J. E. Jones Lumber Company, Montpelier, VA for over 50 years before retiring Robert Elwood Jones was truly loved by his family. Bob will be sorely missed, but forever cherished by his devoted step-daughters: Isadore Jackson (James), Rev. Jane D. Ferguson, Carolyn S. Johnson (Aubrey); grandchildren: James Cosby, Jr., Nicole Anderson (William), Christopher Mallory (Sonja); devoted grandson, Reginald Cosby, Sr. (Eugenia); devoted great-grandson, DaVell Smith (Joy); sister, Pinetta Coleman; brother, Rev. Walter Jones Sr.; nieces: Michelle Green (Jerome), Brigette Christian (William), Elaine Jones; nephews: Rev. Dr. Patrick H. Jones (Alicia), Walter Jones, Jr.; former son in-law, Rev. William Mallory (Deloise); and many other relatives and friends. |
