Charles Anthony “Cheese Rock” Harris entered into eternal rest peacefully on Monday, March 9, 2020 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. He was born on August 6, 1963 in Caroline County, VA to the late Elmore Harris, Sr. and Pauline Gregory Harris. Charles was the sixth of seven siblings. Charles was educated in the Caroline County Public School System. He accepted Christ at Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Marvin Fields. Charles better known as “Cheese Rock” was a pillar of the Dawn Community. He was well known throughout Dawn and surrounding counties. Among many of his passions, his favorite was sitting on his front porch and under the apple tree (if only that tree could talk) waving and saying “Merry Christmas.” Charles was a farmer and on his farm he had many cats, a dog, roosters (one who was proud and mean), and a turtle. Ironically, all of his animals were named “SKIP.” Charles was the ground attendant for the cemeteries in the area. He knew where everyone was buried and he was a keeper of their obituaries. Charles was the F.B.I. of the community. Nothing got by him. He would tell you something and make you promise you would not say anything (although, he had already told 40-50 people). “Don’t tell them I said so!” Charles was an early riser. He would be up and out of the house by 6:00a.m. When asked where he was going, he would reply, “Going over yonder to get my cold one!” Charles was a lively person. His unique sayings and chosen words would make you fall to your knees in laughter. His favorite sayings were “Get on the good foot” and “Talk to the hand.” He enjoyed life to the fullest. Cheese Rock can be summarized as living his life in a lighthearted way, content, joyful, carefree, generous, smiling/laughing, and satisfied. We shall miss him. We know that this is not goodbye, but simply saying until we meet again. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Elmore and Pauline Gregory Harris, Baby Harris, his maternal grandparents, Lloyd Gregory Sr. and Virginia Gregory, and his paternal grandparents, Bennie and Birty Harris, and one sister Vondaris Harris. He leaves to cherish his memory; two devoted sisters, Cathy Harris and Eveline (Kirk) Terrell; two devoted brothers, Elmore Jr., and Deacon Eugene Harris; one aunt, Virginia Gregory; one great-aunt, Catherine Landrum; one uncle, Deacon Curtis Harris, Sr.; Nine nieces, Nichole (Ray) Robinson, Simona Harris, Dr. Matasha Harris, Catina Winston, Crystal Paige, Latonya Winston, Eugenia Paige, and Elizabeth Paige; two nephews, Dennis (Darlene) Harris and Olando Anderson; nine great-nieces, seven great-nephews, two great-great nieces, Corrine and Zolah; devoted friends Jimmy Carter, Julia Wilkerson, Geraldine Baylor and his side-kick, cousin, and neighbor Damian Banks; other relatives and many friends.
