Daniel Ray Cardwell, Sr entered eternal rest on April 11, 2018. He was born on November 3, 1943 on a small coal camp community called Wyco in Wyoming County, WV to Anna (Annie) Walton Cardwell and Charles Nelson Cardwell (both deceased). He was preceded in death by his brothers James Willie Cardwell, Samuel Cardwell and Charlie Cardwell.

Daniel graduated from Dunbar High School, Lynchburg, VA in June 1963 with a 98 in physics, 95 in Math, 92 in English and 80 in Latin. On June 28, 1963 at age 20, Daniel joined the United States Marine Corps, and later went to combat in the Vietnam War. He was wounded and was awarded a Purple Heart. After serving five years in the Marine Corps he retired on disability and later relocated to Washington, DC.

Shortly after moving to Washington, DC he attended and graduated from Northern Virginia Community College in May 1971 with a Computer Science degree. He met and married Patricia Anne Rogers (deceased) from 1980-1993. They have two beautiful children, Danielle and Daniel Jr.

He was employed by Walter Reed Army Medical Center for over 15 years and held various Supervisory Computer Programmer positions until retiring in 1994. He was a member of Canaan Baptist Church, Washington, DC where he was a member of the Men’s Ensemble Choir Group; and is a member of the Prince Hall Free Masons. He later went back to college and in May 1998 at 55 years old he obtained an Associates of Arts Degree in Mental Health.

He loved being a grandfather to his three grandchildren, telling old war stories, making people laugh. He loved listening to old gospel and blues songs.

Daniel is survived by his devoted daughter, Danielle M. Cardwell-Oyola (Radmound); loving son, Daniel R. Cardwell, Jr.; grandson, Tariq Tolbert; two granddaughters, Jazsmine and Jhordin Anderson; three brothers Grady Hull (Ann), Hosea Cardwell, Joseph Cardwell (Louise) and one sister Joyce Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives, and friends.
