Very quietly and peacefully on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, with family by her side, Almighty God In His wisdom, gently closed the eyes of our beloved Joyce Johnson. Joyce was born on April 30, 1946, the ninth child of thirteen to the late Oliver and Ethelene Johnson. She was preceded in death by three brothers (Oliver Jr, Sandy, and Gandy), and one sister, Helen King.

Joyce graduated from Union High School and Smith Madden Business School. At an early age, Joyce was baptized and became a member of Jericho Baptist Church where she served faithfully as church clerk and financial secretary for over forty years until her death.

Her love for God was evident through her life -long service. She served as an Usher, Assistant Sunday School Teacher, member of the Voices of Jericho, Gospel Chorus, and Praise Ensemble, Youth Advisor, member of the decorative staff, hospitality committee, women’s fellowship, and pastoral search committee at Jericho Baptist Church.

Joyce was well-known throughout all of the community churches as she loved to worship God and fellowship any time the doors of the church were open. Additionally, Joyce served as the corresponding secretary for the Mattaponi Baptist Sunday School Association and was a mentor and advisor to many. Joyce was a fun-loving, free spirit who loved everyone and everyone loved her. She was a jewel to her family and she touched many lives. Her family meant everything to her and the love amongst her and her siblings was irreplaceable. Although she had no biological children, she was a mother to all of her nieces and nephews. She had a special bond with each of them and that bond continued through the generations with her great nieces and nephews. Joyce had a way of making them all feel they were her “favorite” and she shares special memories with each of them.

To continue her legacy of love are her loving and devoted sisters Ethel (Frank) Cole, Margaret (William) Roye, Ruby Washington (Carroll deceased), Dorothy Boone (Robert deceased), Katherine (Cleveland) King, Nancy Bray (John deceased), Jean Hopson, Linda (Carroll) Moore, two sisters -in-law, Julia Johnson and Ethel Johnson, brother-in-law, James King, a niece who was like a daughter, Katina Hopson, God Daughter Alasia Dalton, devoted great nephew, Jamal Moore, all of her nieces and nephews whom she loved so dearly, other family and friends.
