Gregory Derek Mines was born on December 11, 1957 to the later Walter A. Mines Sr. and Evelyn J Mines. He departed this life suddenly on December 23, 2017 at his home. He was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church family.

Gregory was known by several different names among them Derek, Shaft, Plastic Man, Yuppie and Buddy Dog. Derek attended public schools in Hanover County and graduated from Patrick Henry High School. Derek was a forklift operator at Jones Lumber Mill

Just like a man with many names he was a man with many skills. A bricklayer, drywall installer, mechanic, furniture mover, landscaper and his favorite a painter.
The only problem when getting Derek to do any work you had to hear him brag about it every time someone said something about his work.

He truly had a style of his own. He was the only man to wear a newspaper suit and was proud of it. Derek was always going to be the life of the party whether he was invited or not.

Derek loved his family he was always willing to help them whenever he could. He was the family jokester, dancer and the first one to go to sleep. He told his family he loved them was just like telling them good morning.

He leaves to mourn a daughter, Lajoi Mines, aa son Derek Lucas. Six grandchildren; Jordan, Jayden, Jarrel, Amaya, Brianna and Madison. Mother, Evelyn mines three brothers; Rev Kelvin Mines (Cathy), Walter, Anthony, three sisters; Marzetta, Jacqueline White and Deborah. A host of nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly and other relatives and friends. Devoted friends Neil Fountain, Marvin Coles and Harvey Shelton.
