Susie Kee

In the wee hours of the morning of Wednesday, May 17th, God opened his arms and Susie Augustus George Kee “strutted” to Him and transitioned from Earth to her heavenly home. She was a resident of the Ashland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ashland, VA at the time of her passing.

Susie was born on February 13, 1921 to the late William C. and Mollie James George in Richmond, VA. She was the only child born of this union.

In 1939, Susie graduated from Armstrong High in Richmond, VA. After graduation, she worked as a seamstress in Thalhimers Department store in Richmond, VA until her retirement.

On December 31, 1940, she was united in holy matrimony to the late George Kelly Kee in Richmond, VA. Three beautiful daughters were born to this union: Portia, Ellen and Betty.

Susie, a long-time member of Fifth Street Baptist Church and later Garland Avenue Baptist Church in Richmond, VA, cultivated her love of singing in the church choir. In addition to singing, she loved to sew, to play bingo and Pokeeno, to whistle, to chew gum, to take pictures with her ever present camera, and to travel, especially cruises. Susie was also an avid bargain shopper. Her motto was “Buy Nice Things Cheap”.

Always a giver, Susie supported the American Red Cross and after retiring, volunteered for her local senior citizen center as well as various charitable organizations such as Latch Key Kids. So that her legacy of giving continued even after her death, she made arrangements to have her body donated to research and science through the Virginia State Anatomical Program.

Susie leaves to cherish her memory: her daughters, Portia K. Stills (Oscar), Ellen K. Hill, and Betty K. Johnson; seven grandchildren, Maria Mayo, Lawrence Johnson (Verba), Cynthia Pope, Benita Stills, Kimberly Johnson, Monica Atkins (Samuel), and Cassandra Collins (Troy); 18 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Portia Kee Harding; and a cousin, William Randolph.
