Romaine Dozier Bowling departed this life on February 24, 2022. She was born on June 17, 1935 in Washington DC to the late Henry Dozier and Mary Blanche Dozier. Romaine graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Washington DC. She attended and was an honor student at Northern Virginia College and Prince George’s Community College where she excelled and loved academia however; she was forced to stop her education due to unforeseen health issues.
After leaving school, Romaine worked for Homemaker Health Aide for twenty years caring for the sick and shut-in. She later worked as a supervisor in a computer tech unit with the United States Department of Commerce Patent and Trademark Office earning the “Bronze Medal Award” on April 11, 1989 for Superior Federal Service. The highest award a civilian can receive while employed with the Federal Government. After twenty years of service with the Patent and Trademark Office receiving numerous certificates of “Recognition and Appreciation”, Romaine retired to focus on restoring her health and helping her family when she saw fit.
At an early age, Romaine accepted Christ into her life. She was baptized at the age of ten at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. As an adult, she converted to the Baptist denomination of Christianity, attending Faith Baptist Church until it disbanded in 1984. Romaine joined Canaan Baptist Church in 1984 and was a very active member until her death. She served as President of the New Members Fellowship Committee, was a member of the unofficial boosters club for the Young People’s Choral Ensemble, was a Sunday school teacher, and served as Mother of Canaan Baptist Church. She was most proud of the “Family of the Year” award presented to the entire Romaine Bowling Family in 2009 by Reverend Larry Owens Jr.
A dedicated mother, grandmother, great grandmother and foster mother, Romaine was dearly loved and played a prominent role in raising many of the Bowling children and several others congregated here today. Romaine was preceded in death by her children Bernadette Renee Bowling and Hayes Bowling Jr. (Vida); her siblings Calvin Dozier, Muriel Dozier, Rita Dozier, Arminta Dozier, Connie Dozier and Sylvia Dozier. Romaine leaves to cherish her memory her children Mary Thomasson and Dwayne Bowling Sr. (Angela); her grandchildren Alisha Bowling, Dwayne Bowling Jr., Hayes Bowling III (Lavina), Angela Elder (Antoine), Connie Findley (Bryon), Jailyn Thomasson; thirteen great grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives.
