Millard Fillmore Burruss entered into eternal rest on December 20, 2023. He was born on May 15, 1942, in Caroline County, VA. He was the 6th of 10 children, born to the late Dallas Currick Burruss and Virginia (Twisdale) Burruss.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Seth, Robert “Bob”, and Sherman.

Millard is survived by nine daughters, Monica (Wayne) Anderson, Ramona (Antoine) Williams, Yulanda (Joseph) Johnson, , Nichole (Michael) Ferguson, Nakita (Vonzell) Mattocks, Bridgette Jackson, Cherilyn Farmer, Michelle (Brandon) Robinson, and Myesha Farmer-Bantjes; four sons, Mario, Jon (Kristin) Jones, Xavier (Angelita) and Spencer (Catherine); 33 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Anderson, Ernestine Burruss, and Cheryl Burruss Renfroe; and three brothers, Reginald, Raymond, and Ernest.

Early in life, Millard attended Caroline County Public Schools and shortly after that he began working as a welder in Warrenton, VA. He enjoyed watching horseraces and frequently visited local tracks with his well-loved brothers. As he grew older, his welding and mechanical skills largely increased, culminating into a position with Bear Island Paper Company in Ashland, VA where he worked for over 20 years. In the latter part of his life, he could often be found at home in his recliner listening to hours of Christian ministry or joy-riding through Ruther Glen and Ashland, VA visiting family and friends.

Throughout his life, Millard enjoyed his mother’s home-cooked meals and family gatherings at the family homeplace. He often bragged about his mother’s mackerel cakes, collard greens and fried apples. He also loved oyster stew, in which he took great pride in making, and attempted to share at times with not so willing partakers. Whatever the occasion, Millard was always in good spirt, smiling and laughing along the way.

Millard will always be remembered for his resilience. After suffering a major stroke at age 62, he was relentless in his desire to maintain his independence. Up until his passing, he fought tirelessly to maintain his ability to walk, drive and handle his own business affairs. Millard’s love for life and resounding determination to press through adversity was remarkable and will always be revered.
