Mary Lorraine Sampson departed this life on March 20, 2024 peacefully at home surrounded by family. She was born November 29, 1941 in Caroline County, VA to the late Bertie Thomas Smith and stepfather Wesley Smith.

Mary joined Jericho Baptist Church at an early age and received her education in the Caroline County Public School System. She was employed by Travel Centers of America for 35 years as a shift lead until she retired.

Mary was the Monarch of her family a loving and caring mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. Everyone Mary came in contact with loved her and her infectious smile. She loved to cook and would always tell everyone to get out of her kitchen. She loved to spend time with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren and had a special connection with each and everyone of them. Mary loved attending sunday school, church service, and her church family. She was a member of the Usher board, Womens Fellowship, Hospitality Committee, and Missionary.

Mary leaves behind a legacy of love that will live on through her five daughters; Priscilla Baylor (devoted son-in-law Tracy), Sandra Freeman, Wanda Sampson of Ruther Glen, VA, Carolyn Sampson of Richmond, VA, and Naomi Johnson (David) of Fredricksburg, VA as well as her three sons William Sampson and Harry Sampson of Ruther Glen, VA and Albert Sampson (Sheila) of Dallas,Texas. She also leaves in love to cherish her memory 23 grandchildren (a very attached grandson Travis Sampson lol) and 40 great grandchildren. She was the oldest sister to her siblings Earlene Mines, Helen Thomas, and Laverne Courtney (devoted brother-in-law Eugene) of Ruther Glen, VA. Mary also leaves behind two aunts Essie Bell Thomas of Ruther Glen, Va., Bertha Redd of Maryland, and a host of neices, nephews, cousins, friends, and special family friends Jesse Lewis, Raymond Thomas, and Chanda Barbour who will miss her dearly.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Wilbur Sampson Sr., daughter Valerie Thomas, son Wilbur Sampson Jr., and her two brothers Charlie and Willie Thomas.
