On Monday, October 3, 2022, Martha Jean Wood, fondly known as ‘Big Jean’ transitioned to her heavenly home to be with the Lord, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Henrico County, Va. Jean, one of 14 children born to her parents, the late Robert and Vera Shelton, was born on September 12, 1940, in Pendleton, Va.
Jean was educated in the Louisa County School System and she was a lifetime member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Mineral, Va., where she attended regularly until her health began to decline.

On January 31, 1970, Jean married Lionel Wood, in Louisa, Va., where they resided and raised a family together. During her years of employment, she worked for numerous companies in the county to include: Louisa Manufacturing, Sacra Restaurant, Johnny Quik Stop, and the North Anna Dominion Power Plant where she managed food services. Her love of cooking made her years of service in the restaurant/food services industry engaging and enjoyable. She loved cooking for her family and friends, which was one of her favorite past times, along with playing cards and bingo, and watching WWE.

In additional to her parents, Jean was proceeded in death by three children, Kathy Wilkerson, Kelvin and Sherry Shelton, and; nine siblings, Thomas and Earl Johnson, Herbert, Robert, Clarence, Lewis, Charles, James and Frances Shelton.

To cherish loving memories of her, Jean leaves: her loving and caring husband of 52 years, Lionel Wood; six children, Janice Graves of Fort Washington, Md., Robert Shelton (Yvonne) of Upper Marlboro, Md., Tammy Scott (Mark) of Mineral, Va., Harvey Shelton (Jackie) of Doswell, Va., Leonell Harris (Darryl) and Duane Wood (LaShanda) both of Mineral, Va. She also leaves 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Shelton; and three sisters, Vera Lee, Dorothy Hunter, and Mary Alsop (Roger) seven sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; one devoted friend, Mary Coleman; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
