The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Irma Mae Smith Johnson gained her Heavenly wings at her home in Montpelier, Virginia on Tuesday, May 5, 2020. Irma was born on September 23, 1930 to the late Louise Smith Robinson.
She attended Hanover County Public Schools and retired several years ago from Safeway Inc. Irma loved people, loved to laugh, travel, play Bingo, and visit casinos. She had a passion for cooking and was known throughout the community as the “potato salad queen.” If you wanted great potato salad, everyone knew it had to be made by Irma.
She worked many years as part of the Hospitality Committee for her home church, Bethany Baptist Church. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Johnson, and two brothers, James and Wallace Smith.
She leaves to cherish her memories four children; Marilyn Smith, Carlton Smith (Nancy), Vanita Reynolds, Alonzo Johnson (Tangie); one honorary son, Rickey Thompson; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jeannette Thomas, Lillie Brooks, and Sarah Gaines; three brothers, Robert, Douglas, and Junius Shelton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
