Harry Byrd Smith was born on September 8, 1928, and departed this life on January 1, 2021. He was one of eleven children born to the late Graham and Ivy Morris Smith.

Harry grew up in Ruther Glen, Virginia, and became a member of the Jericho Baptist Church at an early age. He attended Caroline County Public Schools.

Harry was employed at several jobs over the years, including the Railroad Company and Caroline County Public Works; however, his most enduring job was his own business cutting and selling lumber throughout the county for many years.

Harry was a loving husband and a good father who adored his children and grandchildren. He also loved his nieces and nephews and spent a lot of time picking on them and making them laugh. He also had many friends in the community.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Graham and Ivy Smith; one daughter, Thelma “Peggy” Brown; six Brothers: Baby Chastine, Lloyd, Phil, Shirley, Emmett and Carl “Dick”; three sisters: Baby Christine, Corine, and Felecia “Verdena.” He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife, Mary Smith; One Sister, Mary Dudley; a Son, Keith Smith and Daughter, Frances Byrd, both of Ruther Glen, Virginia. He also leaves to mourn, six grandchildren: Aaron Carter-Smith, Tina and Kira Veney, all of Ruther Glen, Virginia; and Larry Wright (Keely), Anita Wright, and Mashunda Walker, all of Richmond, Virginia; his Great Grandchildren: Joshua Williams, Jailyn Boone, Daijah Wilson, Justin Smithers and Jordan Callahan, of Ruther Glen, Virginia; and Kevon Wright, Devon Stoors, Shavonn Wright, Asiah Fisher and Azariah Flemming, of Richmond, Virginia; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Harry will be remembered for his playfulness, his kindness to others, and his calm demeanor.
