Joseph Carroll Scott, Jr. affectionately known as “Sonny”, was born February 12, 1938, to the late Joseph C. Scott, Sr. and the late Deacon Viola Jackson Fitzgerald in Washington, D.C. He was an only child raised by his grandparents, Deacon Herman and Deaconess Martha Jackson in Louisa, Virginia.

Joe attended the public schools in Louisa, graduating from A.G. Richardson High School in 1957. At Richardson, he played baseball; a sport he truly loved.

Sonny was baptized at an early age by Rev. P.H. West at Mt. Hope Baptist Church. He was known to arrive early, sitting under a tree waiting for the congregation to arrive to start service. Joe was a faithful member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church until his death. He loved his church dearly as well as his pastor, Rev. Dr. Monroe Smith. While a member at Mt. Hope, he served faithfully on various ministries: Trustee, Deacon, Counting team Men’s Choir, Pastor’s Aide, Usher, Men’s Fellowship Ministry and the Senior Ministry, “Young at Heart”. Being the oldest member of Mt. Hope, he was afforded the opportunity to “to burn the mortgage paper” at the church’s anniversary celebration in the Fall of 2022. What an honor!

In the community, Joseph was a member of Louisa/Temple Lodge #113. Back in the day, he also played baseball for the community. Presently, he was a member of Richmond North Chapter # 5356 of AARP in Richmond, VA.

After 34 years of service, Joe retired from AMF as a machine operator. He also worked at S&S body shop as a mechanic and lastly, one of his favorites, was working at Ukrops.

On October 18, 2014, Joseph married Patricia Jones Scott. Although this was a short marriage, there was love, peace, happiness, and joy! Very rarely did you not see one without the other. They have traveled across country twice, visited Canada twice, journeyed to the New England states, Myrtle Beach and just this summer, vacationed in Savanna GA.

Joseph was a gentleman! He was kind, faithful, respectful, dependable and loved by sooooo many individuals. He was dedicated to God, his church, his family and friends. He leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Patricia Jones Scott; children, Verna Henderson, Joseph III, Vernon, Margo, Miranda Mallory and Eddie Jackson, Jr. (Ardelia); numerous grands and great-grandchildren; host of cousins and friends; devoted, Deacon Harvey Cannon and Deacon William Dandridge.

For I am now ready to be offered,
And the time of my departure is at hand.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness,
Which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day:
And not to me only, but unto all of them also that love his appearing.

II Timothy 4:6-8
