August 10, 1942, the late Kermit Thomas Hill and Fannie O. Hill were blessed with the gift of a precious son, George William Hill. He was the twelfth of 15 children. Kermit and Fannie loved and nurtured their son. They prepared him to be a man who was ready for life’s journeys.

George, affectionately known as “Uncle George”, grew up in Hanover County, Virginia. While attending Hanover County Public Schools, the seed of inquiry had been planted for George. He desired to travel, making the lessons of expeditions his teacher. His learning moved beyond the schoolhouse walls and onto the highways that connected him to different places and people. It was time to get behind the wheel and drive.

George loved driving. During his life’s journey, he moved to California where he worked as a truck driver at Coca Cola Bottling Enterprise until he retired in 2005. He also drove special buses from California to Las Vegas on weekends. George liked driving and traveling so much that in retirement, he worked part time as a truck driver with Pratt Industries in Virginia. He enjoyed this time because he met so many people. His special gift to remember everything, including minute details, provided him with conversation fodder. George loved to talk to people! George always embraced new ventures; he kept exploring.

In California, he embraced God’s call to serve. In September 1992 he was baptized and gave his life to Jesus Christ when he joined the True Gospel Missionary Baptist Church where he served as church treasurer. His former pastor Reverend Curtis Glam, Jr., recognized George’s spiritual gifts. In 1999 he was ordained as a deacon, when he continued his service at Leap of Faith and Southern Baptist Churches until he relocated “back home” to Virginia. Moving back home was always George’s goal; he missed Virginia. Once home, he immediately joined his family at Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon in the community and in other capacities. In 2012 Deacon Hill found a church home with Mangohick Baptist Church Family and has continued his service until his health precluded him from doing so. George was ready to travel home.

The word of God says, Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing (Proverbs 18:22). In 2016 he married Joyce Clarke. Together they continued to travel and meet people. George loved being active. Fishing, traveling, and meeting and talking to people created the best adventures for George.
On his journey, George arrived at a rest stop for eternal life. Friday, January 29, 2021, the Lord spoke to George and called him home.
George Hill departed from his natural life, but his memory will be cherished by many. He was predeceased by his parents, Kermit and Fannie Hill; six brothers: Leroy, Lloyd, Kermit, Hermon, Roy, and Howard; seven sisters: Louise Lewis, Bessie Price, Emma Green, Elsie Fleming, Irma Wills, Myrtle and Easter Hill; and late wife, Vilma Hill.

He leaves in love, his wife, Mrs. Joyce Hill; six stepdaughters; one sister, Florene “Duck” Thompson; four sisters in-law: Terri Hill, Fannie Hill, Dorothy Hill and Monica Clarke; one brother in-law, Leon Clarke; a devoted niece, Stacy Scott; grandchildren; devoted cousins: Rev. Clarence Moore and Harold Judd; and a host of adoring nieces and nephews, cousins, and loved ones.
