Cora Pernetta Brown Coates affectionately known as “Puddney” was born June 10, 1934 in Caroline County the twelfth of thirteen children to the late Harvey and Grace Brown. She peacefully entered into eternal rest on February 22, 2020 while being patiently and diligently cared for by her loving sister Gloria Chatman. Cora attended and graduated from Union High School Milford, VA. Over the years she studied and became a Licensed Practical Nurse as well as a Licensed Real Estate Agent.

On August 5, 1950 she was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Walter Welford Coates and they made their home in Ladysmith, VA where they celebrated 65 years of marriage together. They were blessed with five children: Janice Darlene (preceded her in death), Christopher Morley (preceded her in death by just 5 days), Donald Alonzo, Victor Sebastian and Angela Rochelle.

Cora decided to join Beulah Baptist Church where she was an active member and once was even a member of the choir and she remained a faithful member until her health failed. She was a Lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star Welcome Chapter #129 Bowling Green, VA.

Many from the area would be greeted by her while she worked at Safeway Stores in Bowling Green or even when they closed that store and she went to work in their Fredericksburg location. She was such a dedicated worker that when they closed this second store she continued to work for them in their Prince William County, VA location until she retired after over 25 years. She even helped her husband for over 50 years with their business, Coates Trucking, Incorporated, she kept their books and managed payroll all by hand.

Cora leaves to cherish her memory two sons: Donald (Carolyn) and Victor both of Ladysmith, VA, one daughter: Angela of Ladysmith, VA, one Daughter-in-law: Linda of Ruther Glen, VA. Seven Grandchildren: Damion, Dominick, Toland, Koyar, Tenesha, Tresor and Kaeden. Nine Great-Grandchildren: Shari, Dion, Kaeven, Kasen, Alexandra, Trent, Jasmine, Jourdyn and Jayceon. Two Devoted Sisters: Lelia Carter and Gloria Chatman. A host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
