Annie Lee Baker – born Annie Lee Dent – departed this life on October 23, 2021. She was born on October 28, 1943 in Warrenton North Carolina to the Late Seneca Dent, Jr. and Rosa Lee Dent.

Annie was the eldest child of six. Annie was preceded in death by her children Crystal and Derek; husband James Baker; siblings Edna, Michael, Bruce, Seneca III and her grandson Marcellous.

Annie attended the District of Columbia (DC) Public schools and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School.

In her early years, she worked for the Marriott Corporation Hot Shoppes division creating signature meals and desserts for the world to enjoy. In 1967, Annie answered her call to lend her voice and knowledge to the DC Public School system. For fifty years, Annie served the DC government’s Impact Aid office until her well-earned retirement in 2017. In 2017, Annie received a Legacy award for her dedication and commitment to the DC Public School system from Mayor Muriel Bowser. She also received high praise and acknowledgements from the District’s Superintendent of Schools for her work ethic and inspiration to others during her fifty year tenure.

Annie received Christ at an early age at the Sunshine Baptist Church located in Washington, DC.
Annie’s love for Christ stood the test of time; she joined the Canaan Baptist Church alongside her sister Edna in the late Pastor, Dr. Cornelius Carter’s office after one very moving sermon. Since that day, Annie became a prominent figure of the Canaan Baptist Church. She was known for her exquisite Fashion that always set the sanctuary ablaze. Her cuisine amongst the congregation was sought after by all the saints who had experienced it. She served as the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) Ministry President for many years and served on the Pastor’s Vacation Ministry. This was solely because her Ministry was to make sure both Pastor and people were taken care of while they serve the most-high God.

Annie was the most dedicated mom anyone could ask for to Crystal, Derek and Darryl. She made sure her children’s every desire was met and they wanted for nothing. One thing Annie knew through her teachings about Jesus Christ was that love was infinite and you could always make more. In 1961 after the passing of her mother, Annie returned home to raise her much younger siblings Edna, Bruce, Michael, Seneca and Betty displaying the true meaning of love which is sacrifice. This infinite display of love would not stop there; in 1998 after the passing of her daughter Crystal, Annie yet again picked up the task to raise another generation. This sacrificial act to raise her grandchildren Christopher, Erica, Anthony and Alphonso was a true reflection of who she was – a cheerful giver until the end.

Annie was the Executive Chef for “Ask us Caterers” and “Opulent Cuisine llc”.

The thing Annie gave to the world was love because God first loved her. She was a beacon of unmatchable faith that could see anyone through anything. Her light has ascended through her transition and rose to higher mountains than man can climb. Her light and love also continues to live within her Family and friends.

Annie leaves to cherish her memory a VERY devoted son Darryl R. Baker; one sister Betty J. Curtis; one aunt Beatrice Dent; one niece Tyisha Jones (Sam); one nephew Walter Curtis;
thirteen grandchildren: Christopher, Anthony, Alphonso, Erica, Mario, Darryl Jr., Kaya, Diamond, Kiya, Jordan, Jasmine, Derek Jr. and Delonte; five great-grandchildren: Kamorah, Zara, Dakotah, Ahmad and Kylie. Also, a very best-friend Brenda Allen (Charles); one God-daughter Tiajunia Parran and a host of other relatives and friends.
