Obituary

Margaret S. Gordon heard the Masters call on May 6, 2018. She peacefully and sweetly took her last breath in the comfort of her daughters care.

Margaret was born July 25, 1926, in Hanover County VA to the late Anderson Smith and Willinora Smith. Margaret was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years William C. Gordon, daughter Joyce Darlean Gordon and siblings Claudcey Smith, Catherine Smith, James Smith, Mack V. Smith and Mary Bunche.

Margaret was educated at an early age in Hanover County schools. When her older brother decided to better her education she moved to and attended school in Newhaven Connecticut. She moved back to Virginia in her high school years, where she attended Maggie L. Walker High School. In 1946 she was crowned Miss Walker, an accomplishment she was very proud of to this very day. In 1947 she married the love of her life William C. Gordon. Margaret longed to have children, but was never able to…so instead with a heart this BIG she adopted a son and 2 daughters. Margaret worked in various fields in her early years and enjoyed a small modeling career for J Alden, Montaldos and the Hat Factory; in an era where there were very few models of color in Richmond. It was in 1984, she found her true calling as a Dialysis nurse at Richmond Memorial Hospital, where until she worked until she retired.

She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and joined Bethany Baptist Church, after marriage she joined Abner Baptist Church. At Abner she served on the Usher Board, Hospitality committee, and in her later years she became a Deaconess where she served for many years until her health began to fail.

Margaret Gordon was all about family, she always gave and helped wherever it was needed. She spoke her mind, she opened her home to all with shelter, a good meal and an even better story. Mother to all the neighborhood kids, her backyard was full most days. She had a style and sass like no other and loved her hats, pearls and beads. Most of all Margaret Gordon love the Lord.

She leaves to cherish her memory a very devoted daughter Vonda K. Gordon. Honorary Granddaughters Reverend Louise Faulkner and Marie Mines. A very loving and devoted cousin Janis Foster. A loving and devoted Care Team Kim Wood, Barbara Whitaker, Angel Laidley and Delmont Scott who we would not have survived this journey without. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, adopted daughters and sons, other relatives and friends.
