Jerry Sylvester Ferguson battled ongoing health issues for over 25 years. God gave him the victory when he called him home on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. Jerry was secure in his salvation and made it known to family and friends on many occasions that he was ready to accept God’s plan for his life.
Jerry grew up in Caroline County. He was preceded in death by both parents, Alfred and Pearl Ferguson, and brothers Ray, Manon, and Wendell. He is a graduate of Union High School and attended Elizabeth City University, Elizabeth, NC. Jerry served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on January 1, 1975. After leaving the military he worked for the Federal Government at General Services Administration (GSA) for 35 years before retiring in 2004. Jerry continued to be active until his health began to decline. He worked part-time for a couple of local businesses and was a volunteer inspirational speaker for the Re-entry Program at Pamunkey Regional Jail.
Deacon Jerry S. Ferguson was a man of faith who loved God. His motto: Just Do What’s Right
Jerry was a member of Second Baptist Church for over 50 years and served in many capacities in the church until his death. He was a member of the ushers, hospitality, media, and male fellowship ministries. Jerry was a Sunday School teacher, president of the male chorus, a member of the mass choir, and former church sexton. Deacon Jerry S. Ferguson was ordained on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Second Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Dr. Arthur N. Werts.
Jerry married the love of his life, Jane Delois Shelton, on Friday, December 12, 1986. The couple has two god-children, Thessalonia Higgs and Phil Wilkerson, Jr. In Jerry’s own words, his in-laws became his family. He viewed them as sisters and brothers and he has always been Uncle Jerry to the youth in the family. In addition to his devoted wife, Delois and god-children, others will cherish his memories -- sister, Joyce Cox; father in-law, Robert E. Jones; sisters in-law, Isadore Jackson (James); Carolyn S. Johnson (Aubrey), Louise Ferguson, Ann Ferguson; devoted nephew, Rev. Michael Ferguson; devoted friend, Taft Coghill; and a host of relatives and friends.

I thank God for the opportunity of getting to know Deacon Jerry. My wife and I found him to be a soft spoken, kind and God-fearing man. His temperament informed us as to who he was, who he was living for, and who he belonged too. It was our observation that he truly loved his wife and that her family was his family as well. He was cemented into the Shelton/Jones family.
We know that he will be truly missed, but he has received his salvific promise, for which he has worked. He is now resting from his labors and his works will follow him.
Keep your hands in God's hands, keep your hands to the plow, cherish his memories and do not look back. God has blessed him and will continue to bless you as you continue to labor until you all will meet again on the other side.
Please know that we are here for you, just a phone call away!!
We love you dearly,
Rev. Larry E. and Evangelist Carson A. Lewis
