Valerie Renee Grooms, age 53, of Montpelier, VA received her heavenly wings on November 3, 2017. Cancer may have won the battle, but she won the “Ultimate Victory” through Jesus Christ!
Renee was born on January 22, 1964. She was the middle child seven thoroughly spoiled children born to the late Charles & Joyce Thomas of Beaverdam, VA. She was preceded in death by her brother Darrell Thomas and grandparents: Andrew & Edmonia Jones and James & Lenora Thomas. She attended Hanover County Public Schools, graduating from Patrick Henry High School in 1982. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland College Park in 1986. She was a 16-year employee and an Associate of Draper Aden Associates (DAA) where she last served as their Accounting Manager.
On August 24,1996, she married Willie Grooms. This union brought forth the pride and joy of her life, a daughter, Brianna Renee Grooms on April 6, 1998. Renee fought hard to have and for her daughter until the very end. There is nothing she would not have done for her or for her to succeed in life.
Renee loved her family and spending time with them, especially her daughter. If you knew her, you know she also loved the Dallas Cowboys. She drove you crazy about ‘Dem Cowboys! Renee was very easy going and mild-mannered until a Cowboys game came on and then it was another story. Some of her favorite hobbies were reading and going to the beach. She was very a loving and supportive Auntie who enjoying cheering her nieces & nephews on when they participated in sporting and other events. They loved their “NaNa” and know that she will continue cheer them on as they journey through life. Like most of us, they will miss teasing her when the Cowboys lose, for like a true Cowboys fan, our Renee could dish it out, but she couldn’t take it.
Renee also enjoyed fishing when she wasn’t getting the hook caught in her hair or the trees and playing softball when she wasn’t getting hit in the nose with the ball when trying to catch it. Renee always looked forward to getting together with her cousins and other family members from near and far, whether it was just sitting around talking, having a cookout or going out for a meal or a movie.
Renee enjoyed her years working a DAA where she was the “Queen Bee” and made many friends there who loved and will miss her.
She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory her Husband: Willie Grooms; Beloved Daughter: Brianna Grooms; two Sisters: Gwen James & Erica Thomas; three Brothers: Mark Jones (Tina), Michael Thomas (Wilma), & Shawn Thomas (Krista); Aunts: Alice Powell, Helen Jones, Pearline Graves, Ida Johnson and Sallie Tyler; Uncles: William Jones (Diane) & Ben Thomas; Stepdaughter: Sherita Fredericks (Warren); Sisters-in-law: Tamara Thomas & Lena Smith; Brother-in-law: Albert Grooms (Francine); Uncle-in-law: Berkeley Jackson; two grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Celebrating the life of Valerie Renee Grooms
Thank you for signing Valerie Renee Grooms's Guestbook
Willie and Bri we were so sadden to hear of Valerie's passing. Even though it has been a few years since we would see each other often. You all were thought of frequently in our hearts with a "hello" in spirit. We will always cherish the many aau games and the good laughter and conversations during the games and the outings we shared afterwards.
We will miss her dearly! Love Timothy, Kelly and Whitney Hill

I am going to miss Valerie so much. She shared her love and kindness with so many people. Valerie was always an encouragement to others and kept smiling in spite of her physical struggles. 2 Corinthians 4:16 says "That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day." Valerie lived this example with her strong faith and steadfast courage. God bless you my dear sweet friend.
