Obituary

Lucy Jane Jones entered eternal rest on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 with her love ones at her bedside. She was born on Friday, November 15, 1929 to the late John David and Blanche Thaniel and was preceded in death by both siblings, Mattie M. Harris and John W. Houchens.

Jane is the widow of the late Joseph R. Shelton with whom she bore five daughters, Isadore, Delois, Jo-Anne (deceased October 15, 2006), Linda (deceased October 3, 2000), and Carolyn. She married her devoted husband, Robert Ellwood Jones on September 27, 1975. There are no children from this union; however, the couple raised great-grandson, Davell Smith, as one of their own.

Jane has been a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church since her baptism on Friday, August 11, 1940, under the pastorate of Rev. Eugene E. Robertson. She was a faithful member who served her church until death. She was involved with various church ministries over the years, including Sunday school and Vacation Bible school teacher and Assistant Clerk. At the time of her death she was President of the Gospel Chorus and Sanctuary Choir; Vice President of the Missionary Ministry; a member of the Hospitality Ministry and Executive Board at the church.

Jane was committed to her desire to finish high school. She attended classes at the Adult Education Program in Hanover County while holding down a full-time job. She was awarded her GED (General Education Development) certificate when she graduated from the program on May 20, 1986.

Her employment spanned decades, going far beyond her retirement from Tyson Food, Inc. (formerly Holly Farms Poultry Industries, Inc.) after 32 years of service. During the 19 years following her retirement, Jane did domestic work for several years. After that she worked in child care at Expressions Day Care (currently known as Abundant Love Child Development Center) in Bumpass, VA. Jane was a model employee in the work force as well as in her church. She was awarded six certificates for excellence in service at Holly Farms and Tyson. She also received 30 perfect attendance awards during her 32 years with the companies. There were very few occasions at the church where you did not find her busy working in the kitchen or singing on one of the choirs. God’s greatest challenge in receiving Jane into his Kingdom is convincing her that it is OK to sit down and relax now.

Lucy Jane Jones was the matriarch of the family. Her memories will forever be cherished by her devoted husband, Robert; daughters--Isadore Jackson (James); Delois Ferguson (Jerry); Carolyn S. Johnson (Aubrey); devoted great-grandson Davell Smith and former son in-law, Rev. William Mallory (Deloise). Many others will cherish her memories: brothers in-law, Deacon James Jones, Rev. Walter Jones, Thomas Harris; sister in-law, Pinetta Coleman; four grandchildren, James Cosby, Jr., Nicole Anderson (William), Reginald Cosby, Sr. (Eugenia), Christopher Mallory (Sonja); 14 great-grandchildren; devoted nephew, James Linwood Thaniel; devoted friends, Lillian Morris, Alma Mallory, and Ernestine Johnson.
