Mrs. Rosa Belle Courtney Quash, known by many as Aunt Belle, peacefully transitioned from labor to reward, Monday, February 5, 2018.
Rosa Belle was born February 25, 1920 to Mattie and Arthur Courtney in Caroline County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters; Bessie Benjamin and Hortense Courtney, two brothers; Vernon Courtney, and William James Courtney.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was a devoted lifetime member of Second Mount Zion Baptist Church. She served faithfully for many years as president of the Senior Choir, treasurer of the Pulpit Circle, chairperson of the Church Calendar Committee, and member of the Senior Missionary Circle and Scholarship Fund Committee.

She completed her early education in the Dawn Elementary School and Union High School. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Virginia State College, now Virginia State University. She further studied at Teachers College Columbia University in New York City where she received her Masters in Early Childhood Education and later did additional studies in education at the University of Virginia.

Her employment experience included teaching at Radiant Elementary School in Madison County, Virginia, Sunshine Elementary School in Woodford, Virginia, Dawn School in Caroline County, Virginia, Union Elementary and Bowling Green Primary School in Bowling Green, Virginia.

Rosa Belle was a committed and involved citizen in the Caroline County community. She served on numerous boards, commissions and associations including the Dawn Area Planning Advisory Committee, Dawn Progressive Association, Caroline Cancer Society Board Member, McGuire Veterans Volunteer, CERVE-Caroline Emergency Relief (through) Volunteer Efforts, Inc., Caroline Retired Teachers Association (Treasurer), Virginia State University Alumni, Caroline County Library Board, State and National Education Association, NAACP (lifetime member), and Youth Sponsor for the NAACP.

She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors for distinguished service. In 2016, she was recognized for her service to Caroline County by the Caroline County Board of Supervisors. In 1990, Region III of Virginia State University Alumni Association saluted Mrs. Quash as “Trojan of the Year”. In 1984, she received a certificate of award from the Caroline County Chambers of Commerce for work in the field of education. In 1976, she received a plaque from Region III of Virginia State University Alumni for dedicated services rendered.
She had a passion for helping others. She loved traveling and collecting elephants. In her early 90s, she was still driving to all the meetings and events she had to attend. When asked how are you doing? She simply responded, “I don’t have an ache or pain; God is truly blessing me.”

She leaves to cherish her memory, nieces Evelyn Dupree (devoted), Barbara Courtney, Alease Nicholas, June Howell, Regina Patterson (Greg) and nephew Arthur Courtney, devoted cousins; Dorothy James and Deborah Spearman, and a host of great nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
