Obituary

Larry Owens Sr., 71, of Henrico County, peacefully slipped into eternal rest on Sunday, March 12, 2017 in the presence of his wife and sons. He was born in Columbia, TN on September 12, 1945 to the late Roger and Lucille Cotham Owens Smith.

He was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Holmes; 4 brothers, Ralston, Jimmie, William, Jerry Owens and stepfather James Smith. He was an active member of the U.S Navy, driving river boats in Vietnam, where he was honorably discharged. Larry attended the university of Michigan before transferring to Howard University in Washington D.C, earning degrees in business, political science and accounting. Before retirement he was a Staff Manager for Real Estate Operations for C & P Telephone/ Bell Atlantic/ Verizon.

After marrying Joan Reid on March 24, 1979 he joined Moore Street Missionary Church. He was a very active member, serving on the Male Usher Board, Brotherhood, Liaison for all of the usher boards of the church. He was also a member of the finance committee and Sunday school teacher of the Adult Bible Class #4. Larry Owens Sr. became an ordained deacon on June 10, 1990; where he served several years as secretary for the deacon board.

Since 2004, he has owned his own business, Owens Tax Services with many customers that will greatly miss him. Larry and his family loved to travel out of the country, he has traveled to Aruba, Bahamas, Canada, Spain, St. Martin, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Tobago as well as many states in the U.S.

Larry is survived by his devoted care giver and wife of 38 years, Joan Reid Owens; two devoted sons - Rev. Larry Jr. (Lawanda), Sherrod (Adrailya), and daughter Bevley Green (Andre) of Saraland, AL, six grandchildren- Khaleed, Renata, Harmony, CeYanna, Andre Jr. and Lauren, two sisters- Bettie Wilkinson ( Sherman) of Georgetown, KY, Linda Owens of Columbia, TN, and one brother- Dale Owens of Columbia, TN. Although he had various health issues, he never complained, and was always in great spirits, smiling and joking. He will be greatly missed.
