Mary Eva Mallory

Mary Eva Johnson Mallory was born on September 3, 1917, the last surviving daughter of the six children of the late Sampson Johnson and Roxy Anna Johnson.

She accepted Christ at an early age and attended New Line Baptist Church. After marrying Thomas Mallory, she attended Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. She worked for a number of years at Holly Farms, as an assembly line packer and sorter, and retired due to health conditions.

She was a loving mother to 9 children, 3 foster children and a host of grand children, great grand children and great, great children. She loved her family with undivided loyalty, and never hesitated to make sacrifices for any of them. In her later years, after losing her lifelong partner, Thomas, and due to failing health, she moved to Washington DC. She lived to live with her loving and devoted daughter Thelma until her health failed and became a resident of Ingleside of Rockcreek Nursing Center. Thelma went far and beyond ordinary expectations to make sure her mother wanted for nothing and was happy and comfortable, as much as possible. Verna, her devoted granddaughter often visited and spent days sitting with her nanny, playing her favorite game, Bingo, singing to her and taking her to other events and activities so as to keep her engaged and stimulated.

Mary was best known for her big heart and giving ways; she opened her home to all who needed food, shelter or love, even when she had little for her own. Cousins and family acquaintances were always welcome and accepted without question by this bigger than life mother to all. In fact her nickname of “Biggar” reflected how everyone viewed her as the one with the big heart. Mary is survived by and will be missed most of all by her loving children Beulah, Thomas, Evelyn, Cheryl and Thelma.
